Hyphen is more than just a light fixture; it’s a luminous sculpture, a dialogue between material and light, an exploration of union and balance. Two suspended cylindrical bodies intertwine in a fluid, silent motion. With its curving shape, the versatile Hyphen can be used as a pendant light. Connected by a central pivot, the modules offer a variety of positions and orientations, projecting a soft, directional light that evolves with the space. It can also be a table lamp, with one or two modules arranged in multiple ways thanks to a base that perfectly embraces their forms.
“With Hyphen and our work in general, we aim to design light fixtures that bring a unique character to an environment, create emotion, enhance a décor, and spark curiosity,” says Alex Joncas.
The name Hyphen is derived from the ancient Greek huph’ hén (ὑφ’ ἕν), which means the union of two opposites into one. The collection is available in several materials: warm, soft, and delicate porcelain is complemented by cold, strong, and brilliant steel. The materials and finishes have been carefully selected to interact with light and reveal subtle chromatic variations, even when the object is switched off. Hyphen transcends its lighting function; it evokes a feeling of connection and serenity, enveloping its surroundings in a luminous embrace that is both poetic and intimate.
This modular lighting collection includes four models: Hyphen Pendant, Hyphen Table Simple, Hyphen Table Double, and Hyphen Wall.
“Hyphen is unique in its form as well as its production process, through its artistic collaboration and the use of porcelain and molding,” says Alex Joncas.
True to its co-creation philosophy, Darmes values collaboration and craftsmanship. The collection benefits from the expertise of ceramic artist Gréta Jonckheere. Each porcelain piece is shaped by hand in Morin-Heights, Quebec. This meticulous process, completed in several stages over multiple days, gives each piece a unique texture that captures the essence of touch and time.
The Hyphen collection was first presented at International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) 2022 and won the Archiproducts Design Award in 2022.
The lights are assembled in the DARMES workshop in Canada, using recyclable aluminum, in partnership with local suppliers. These collections are shipped worldwide with carbon neutral shipping.
